ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL CARE

Environmental Care is a collection dedicated to falling in love with environmentalism through the lens of self- care.

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL CARE?

Taking part in environmental care is, and should be at the heart of self-care. Falling in love with what you already have combined with sustainable swaps make for a healthy relationship between oneself and the world around them.

This initiative was inspired by creators advocating through media for environmental change and mental health awareness. As a young person seeking ways to do my part, it is hard to do so without feeling burnt out. Environmental activists have paved the way for the next generation of environmentalists to make greater strides; in taking these next steps, I believe self-care should be at the heart the movement.

Climate change is not an individual issue. It is on corporations and interests groups, political leaders and lawmakers to take the reins in making drastic changes to better our future. However, constituents and consumers hold more power than we know to advocate for change. Seeing this relationship as “us” and “them,” paralleling the “demand” and “supply” relationship, we must use our power as the demand to call for change. Social media has given the demand a platform to have powerful conversations on a larger scale, unifying our voices to make our demands concise.

Environmental Care aims to support the larger scale environmental movement, but takes it down to the individual level. Changing our consuming patterns can change the way suppliers meet the demand; simultaneously, focusing on individual changes allows one to create routines that both benefit one’s mind and community. The aim of this initiative is to bring power back to the individual environmentalist by providing self-care-oriented solutions.

ABOUT THE CREATOR

My name is Maggie Giles (she/her). I’m Purchase College new media major, and I have spent this last year focused on Environmental Care as a collective. My understanding of social media activism stems from my work at Students Against Child Marriage as a founder and Director of Communications. Over the course of a year, I developed a platform to educate on child marriage in the United States through art. Through art, child marriage was made illegal in Rhode Island and New York. From there, I began as an intern with author, educator, and creator of the viral series “Smarter In Seconds,” Blair Imani. Through this internship, I developed branding and media skills that helped to make a community with Blair and her followers. These experiences bring us to the beginnings of Environmental Care.
